About Cambridge AS & A Level

Cambridge International AS & A Level is the pre-university qualification most often taken in Pakistan after O Level or IGCSE. A student can take the AS Level alone, or take AS and then A2 to complete the full A Level.

Subjects have four-digit codes starting with 9, such as 9701 for Chemistry or 9709 for Mathematics. Papers are named with a paper and variant number, so 9701_s23_qp_42 is syllabus 9701, May/June 2023, question paper, paper 4 variant 2.

How Cambridge Papers Are Named

In Cambridge AS & A Level file names, the first paper digit shows the component: papers 1 to 3 are usually AS, and papers 4 and above are A2. The second digit is the variant. The session letter is m for February/March, s for May/June and w for October/November.

How Cambridge AS & A Level Is Assessed

The course is assessed in components that cover AS content and A2 content. Many subjects include a practical or an alternative to practical, and some allow AS and A2 to be sat in the same series. The syllabus lists the component combinations.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are examined in the May/June and October/November series. AQA and OCR A Levels are examined in the summer series.

Entering the Cambridge AS & A Level Exams

Students enter through a registered school or centre. Ask the centre about entry options, such as taking AS and A2 papers in one series.

The exam board's own site is Cambridge University Press & Assessment (Cambridge International Education), which holds the current syllabuses and rules.
