ECAT English Past Papers and Practice Questions

ECAT English papers are being added to this page, so the list below may be empty for now.

Language and literature papers ask you to read closely, support a view with evidence and write in a controlled, well-organised way. Past test papers show the style of the questions and the pace of the test, which is what this page helps you practise.

The syllabus, the test format and the marking rules for ECAT are set by the testing authority and can change from year to year, so check the latest official notice before relying on an old paper. Files are published by Engineering College Admission Test (Pakistan); Trinity Tutors is an independent tutoring service and is not endorsed by or affiliated with the board.

How to Prepare for ECAT English with Past Papers

Old papers are most useful for learning the format and finding weak areas in English. Do not assume that questions will repeat.

How to identify the paper, session and variant

ECAT practice papers are organised by the year of the test and the subject section.

ECAT is generally held once a year, so papers are grouped by year rather than by session.

Each file belongs to one section of the test. Use the section that matches the part you are revising.

Practise under test conditions

Set a timer for the section you are practising, answer in one sitting and avoid looking at notes. Record both your score and how long you took, since pace matters in a timed test.

Plan longer answers briefly before writing, so that the structure is clear and every paragraph answers the question.

Read the assessment objectives or marking criteria for the paper and write with them in mind, not only the question wording.

Plan each long answer in a few minutes before writing, and divide the time by the marks so that no question is left unfinished.

Checking your answers

No mark schemes have been added for English yet. Until they are, ask your teacher to check your work or look for the matching mark scheme on ECAT's website.

Use the levels or band descriptors as a checklist and decide honestly which band your answer matches; there is rarely a single correct answer to compare with.

Typical slips are retelling instead of analysing, quotations without comment, drifting from the question and careless spelling or punctuation.

Keep an error log and plan your revision

After each paper, write down every lost mark in a log. Record whether an answer lost marks for structure, lack of evidence, weak explanation, accuracy of language or time spent.

Then turn the log into a short weekly plan: choose two or three topics, revise them from your notes, and test them with fresh questions. Spread the papers you have across several weeks instead of attempting them all at once.

A good week pairs one timed response with a rewrite of a paragraph that stayed descriptive, followed by reading a model answer for structure.

Practise by skill or text (comprehension, writing tasks, set texts) so that you can see progress in the exact skill being assessed.
