How to Choose Your O Level Subjects

Choosing subjects feels like a big decision because it shapes what you can study later. A short, structured process makes it easier.

Start with what is required

Schools usually require English and Mathematics and often a Pakistan-specific subject. Ask for the list of required and optional subjects, and for how many a student is allowed to take.

Think about A Level and university

If you plan to study sciences at A Level, you will need O Level or IGCSE sciences and Mathematics. If you are considering business, economics or accounting, check which O Level subjects the school expects. Universities publish their requirements, so look at two or three courses you might want.

Balance interest, strength and workload

Choose subjects you can sustain for two years. A mix of subjects that need writing and subjects that need calculation spreads the workload across the year.

  • List the subjects you must take.
  • List the subjects you need for later plans.
  • Fill the remaining places with subjects you enjoy and can manage.

Talk to people who know

Teachers see how you work in class. Students a year or two ahead know the workload. A tutor can also explain what a subject involves; see the subject pages on our O Levels tutors page for an outline of each course.

Choosing O Level subjects: Where to Go Next

If you want help with a subject, see O Levels tutors. For more guides, see O Levels resources, and for exam papers, our past-paper library.

For the rules, syllabuses and dates themselves, use the official websites: Cambridge International Education. Boards change details from time to time, so check them before you plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many subjects should I take?

It depends on the school and your plans. More subjects mean more exams and revision, so be realistic about workload.

Can I add a subject later?

Sometimes, as a private candidate in a later series, but it depends on the centre. Ask early.

What if I choose wrongly?

Talk to your school as soon as you notice. Early changes are easier than late ones.
