O Levels guide
O Levels Grading System Explained
Students and parents often ask how a mark on a paper becomes a grade on a certificate. This guide explains the scales used by Cambridge O Level and IGCSE and how to read your result.
The O Level grade scale
Cambridge O Level results are reported from A* (the highest) down to E. A result below the lowest grade is shown as U, which means ungraded. Results are given per subject.
IGCSE results follow a similar idea, but the scale depends on the syllabus: many report A* to G, and some report numbers from 9 to 1. The syllabus for your subject code says which scale applies.
How marks become grades
Each paper has a total mark, and the marks from all papers in a subject are combined, usually with each paper weighted as the syllabus states. The combined mark is then compared with the grade thresholds for that series.
Grade thresholds are the minimum marks needed for each grade. They are decided after each series and published by the board, so the same mark can give different grades in different series. This is why students should not rely on the thresholds of one year when planning.
How to use this when revising
Aim for secure marks across the whole paper rather than aiming at a threshold. Past papers and mark schemes show where marks are earned, and our guide to past papers explains how to use them.
If a result is lower than expected, the board offers a review of marking in some cases. Ask your exam centre about the process and the deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are grade thresholds the same every year?
No. They are set for each series after marking, so they vary. The board publishes them after the results.
What does U mean?
U means ungraded: the combined mark was below the lowest grade.
Where can I find the thresholds?
On the board's website, in the grade thresholds document for each series. Our past-paper library lists them where they have been added.
