O Levels guide
O Level vs IGCSE: What Is the Difference?
O Level and IGCSE are both secondary qualifications taken at about the same age. They are close in purpose but not identical, and the right choice is usually the one your school teaches.
What they have in common
Both are international qualifications that students prepare for over two years. Both are examined in the May/June and October/November series, and both are accepted as a foundation for A Level study in most schools.
Where they differ
Syllabuses and codes are different. Cambridge O Level codes are mostly four digits, such as 5070 for Chemistry, while Cambridge IGCSE codes include 0620 for Chemistry. The content and paper structure differ in several subjects.
Grading can differ too: O Level reports A to E, while IGCSE syllabuses report A to G or, for some, 9 to 1. Some IGCSE subjects have Core and Extended tiers, so the highest grade available depends on the tier.
- Check the syllabus code on your school's course outline.
- Use past papers with the same code.
- Ask whether you are entered for Core or Extended where it applies.
Which one should I choose?
In most cases the school makes the choice. If you are a private candidate, check which syllabus the exam centre offers, the dates and the subjects you want, and ask whether the qualification is accepted for the next stage you plan.
O Level vs IGCSE: Where to Go Next
If you want help with a subject, see O Levels tutors. For more guides, see O Levels resources, and for exam papers, our past-paper library.
For the rules, syllabuses and dates themselves, use the official websites: Cambridge International Education. Boards change details from time to time, so check them before you plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IGCSE easier than O Level?
Neither is simply easier. They have different syllabuses and papers, so how hard a subject feels depends on the student and the topic.
Can I switch between them?
Usually not mid-course, because the content differs. Ask your school or exam centre early if you want to change.
Do universities accept both?
Most do, but each university sets its own requirements. Check the entry requirements of the courses you want.
